Attendance at Richard Lee

At Richard Lee Primary School, we believe that:


  • Pupils need to attend school every day so that they can take full advantage of the educational opportunities available.
  • Poor attendance rates and persistent lateness undermines the educational process and leads to educational disadvantage.
  • Children who attend school every day make better progress and have better life chances.



The school will strive to provide a welcoming, caring environment, whereby each member of the school community feels wanted and secure.

All school staff will work with and support students and their families to ensure each student attend school regularly and punctually.

The school will establish an effective system of incentives and rewards acknowledging the efforts of students to improve their attendance and timekeeping and will challenge the behaviour of those students and parents who give low priority to attendance and punctuality.

To meet these objectives Richard Lee School will establish an effective and efficient system of communication with students, parents and appropriate agencies to provide mutual information, advice and support.




At Richard Lee we have established systems of incentives and rewards that acknowledge the efforts of students to improve their attendance and timekeeping.


Cheeky Monkey Attendance Project


The ‘Cheeky Monkey Attendance’ project promotes good attendance. The attendance is tracked weekly and results are shared during phase assemblies. The results are displayed prominently throughout the school and boards in the two halls reflect the efforts each class is making.


Each class moves their monkey up the attendance tree by scoring points:-


100% or winner of week = 3 moves (a banana award!)

98% = 2 move

95% = 1 move


When they reached the top of the tree the class wins the £10 coconut prize which the class can spend on games or treats for their class.  

The class with the highest % gets to have the ‘cheeky monkey’ in their class for that week.


The achievement of children with an attendance of 100% will be celebrated each half term. Also children with significant improvement in attendance will be recognized each term.
