CURRICULUM AND PROJECTS

A curriculum for Richard Lee Primary School

“Our aim is to provide our pupils with a broad and balanced curriculum which equips them with the skills, knowledge and understanding to be successful in life. We value the importance of providing our pupils with a rich curriculum which makes cross curricular links and provides pupils with fun and engaging lessons. In order to achieve this, we have worked with Cornerstones resource to help us create a curriculum which is designed for all, despite different starting points. We recognise that for our children to be successful they need to achieve and thrive. Our curriculum therefore has a strong ‘thrive’ aspect running throughout which supports, develops and strengthens our children’s emotional and social well-being.

We recognise the importance of core curriculum skills throughout our foundation curriculum and where possible we teach lessons in a cross-curricular way. Reading and writing are critical skills and capabilities that we put considerable focus on (particularly in key stage 1) as this is a means of accessing further and wider learning opportunities. Throughout our curriculum, we make best use of assessment information to enable our pupils to develop key skills and reach their goals and beyond through challenge from adults, their peers and themselves. Our world is a technological one – and our curriculum seeks to both use technology in the service of learning and to ensure children have skills and capacity to deal with this rapidly changing world.

At Richard Lee all children experience a curriculum that has the four elements of Engage, Develop, Innovate, Express (EDIE) threaded through. We value these elements in providing learning as a varied but clear process. Our Philosophy for Children sessions offer a way to open up children’s learning through enquiry and the exploration of ideas. They realise that there can be many different opinions or perspectives and gain the confidence to ask questions and learn through discussion.

The design of our curriculum also ensures that children are given the opportunity to take part in a variety of ‘wider horizons’ experiences such as trips and visits, sporting, cultural and outdoor/forest school activities. These are built into the curriculum as an ‘enrichment map’ and provide children with opportunities they might not normally experience. There are planned whole school events across the year that allow us to come together as a school community. These include special focus weeks, such as ‘Aspirations week’, science projects, and days such as World Book Day and charity events eg Water Aid.

Coventry and Warwickshire are rich in local history, as well as areas of geographical interest, and as a school we strongly believe that our children should both contribute to and understand their local community. Therefore, in each year group there are aspects within the topics, that look at what is local to us, and then develop insights into the wider UK and explore our links across the world. Our grounds allow us to develop outdoor learning through our forest school in our ‘Spinney’, Eco club and allotment work.
