Year 1

Y1 Curriculum Overview

Autumn 1 Paws, Claws and Whiskers

In science we will find out about a range of different animals, describing and comparing them. In geography we will use maps and globes to find out about the hot and cold areas of the world, and especially the animals that live there. We will also think about humans, the five senses and the parts of the body linked to each sense. We will explore mixing colours in art to create new colours.

Why not take photos of a favourite pet together and describe their habits, likes and dislikes? You could also put bird food in the garden and visit a local park or nature reserve for a spot of bird-watching. Make a note of their markings and features then use a simple spotting book or app to identify different species. Alternatively, visiting the local pet shop or petting zoo would allow you to observe a wide range of different animals.

Summer 2 Splendid Skies

What is the weather like today? In Science we will observe the weather and look for patterns across the days and weeks. In geography we will find out all about the UK. We will learn about the countries and capitals of the UK, and the seas that surround the UK. We will explore maps and make maps of our own. In art we will use paint to capture the shape of clouds and the colour of the sky. We will also explore weaving with a variety of textiles and textures.

Go for a walk together and spot the signs of the season. Make a collage or other artwork of your favourite type of weather. Watch a local or national weather forecast and discuss the symbols used for the different types of weather. Find out about other places in the UK. Perhaps there is a place in the UK you have visited together? You could find this place on a map. Think about local geography and make a map of your route to school.
